Bali’s rhythm, its ceremony, agriculture and tide, are changing under the weight of development. Zissou has spent his recent years reacting to this delicate flow, using his camera to celebrate the ephemeral and tell stories, even ones with ambigious narratives. He now invites a new audience in Lisbon to pause and consider this fragile tropical beauty, if only to encourage others, no matter where we find ourselves, to prioritise a future that honours the land and respects and celebrates the local cultures.
This Lisbon exhibition will serve as a landmark moment; the first solo show of Zissou's photographs in Europe. We will present a curated selection of his black-and-white images, drawn from his extensive Bali archive.
The exhibition has a deeper intention, not just to showcase, but connect, transmit, and pay homage to the soul of Bali to an audience that may lately have a jaded perception of the island.
His photography is not about nostalgia, but presence; using his camera to express his gratitude for his home base in his recent years.
As Bali stands at a crossroads, so too does Lisbon. The artist sees in both places a call of the same questions, asking how we grow without erasing what really matters and how humans can honour what we inherit.
Over the past decade, Zissou has garnered acclaim for his documentary, nature, and environmental portraiture photography. His work unveils the quietly compelling details of the natural world and human intimacy, where the interplay of chance, available light, and fleeting moments is balanced by a meticulously considered approach to composition. Each image unfolds with a poetic resonance, a measured invitation to linger and discover its subtle depths.
Zissou’s choice of subject matter is deeply entwined with his own mode of living. Once immersed in the vibrant urban rhythms of London, Melbourne, Madrid, and San Francisco, his creative journey has found new expression in Bali, Indonesia. Now rooted in a tropical forest, residing in an open-air bamboo home he designed, helped build, and continues to maintain, he advocates a regenerative way of life that harmonizes with nature and forges an intimate bond with his community. This self-sufficient existence echoes through his measured, evocative images, each a quiet testament to the enduring dialogue between humanity and the environment.
Estrela 74 is a newly inaugurated art space in the heart of Lisbon, offering roughly 300 square metres of exhibition and creative space across three floors. Once a coal depot, it now supports a vibrant programme of exhibitions, performances and multidisciplinary projects that reflect the diversity of contemporary art and the vitality of Lisbon’s cultural scene.
