Bali’s rhythm, its ceremony, agriculture and tide, are changing under the weight of 'development'. Zissou has spent the years reacting to this delicate flow through instinct, using his camera to celebrate the ephemeral and tell stories, even ones with ambigious narratives. He now invites a new audience in Lisbon to pause and consider this fragile tropical beauty, if only to encourage others to prioritise a future that honours the land, its people, and their enduring heritage.
This upcoming exhibition marks a significant milestone: his first solo show in Europe, hosted Lisbon. The exhibition will present a curated selection of his black-and-white photographs, drawn from his extensive archive.
This evocative collection offers a powerful lens into the spirit of Bali and the resilience of its cultural identity. During the opening night (and the run of the show) we will highlight Bali’s living traditions and rituals, inviting guests to connect more deeply with the island’s essence—and reflect on the importance of preserving its soul in the face of rapid change.
At the heart of this exhibition lies a deeper intention—not just to showcase, but to connect, transmit, and awaken.
Zissou’s drive is rooted in a long-standing commitment: to bear witness to cultures at risk, to listen where others overlook, and to give space to stories that still resist silence. His photography is not about nostalgia, but presence—a way of holding on to what is essential, before it fades.
Bringing this body of work to Lisbon is more than a geographical step; it’s a gesture of bridge-building—between worlds, between tempos, between ways of seeing.
As Bali stands at a crossroads, so too does Lisbon. The artist sees in both places a reflection of the same question: How do we grow without erasing? How do we honour what we inherit, while facing the future with care?
This exhibition invites the viewer to engage with these questions—not merely intellectually, but emotionally. To feel the textures of ritual, the dignity of community, and the quiet power of places where time moves differently. It’s a call not only to look, but to remember, respect, and perhaps, to re-imagine.
Photography, for Zissou, is a family affair. He received his original nickname from the older brother of family friend Jacques-Henri Lartigue.
From birth, he played in his uncle’s darkrooms and rummaged through his father’s award-winning photo-journalism gear—occasionally exposing film by accident.
“I considered the 8th art as their own world, so I later chose painting, digital graphics and web design,” he recalls.
A revelation came when he first set foot in Bali; his 35 mm camera felt like the perfect tool to tell the island’s story—abundant nature, brilliant light.
Over more than a decade, he has been acclaimed for landscape photography and documentary work, developing a unique visual vocabulary.
“The excitement of not knowing what I might find along my adventures mitigates any risk of boredom,” he enthuses.
Now living self-sufficiently in Bali’s jungle, he continues to create crisp yet ethereal images rife with ambiguity—fragments that invite the viewer to find their own narrative.
Estrela 74 is a newly inaugurated art space in the heart of Lisbon, offering roughly 300 m² of exhibition and creative area across three floors. Once a coal depot, it now supports a vibrant programme of exhibitions, performances and multidisciplinary projects that reflect the diversity of contemporary art and the vitality of Lisbon’s cultural scene.
